What’s the Meaning of Home?

Home means so many things to each of us. Safety. Security. Peace of mind. When you support our 2020 Meaning of Home campaign, you're linking arms with young students across Canada to empower families through affordable homeownership. The Meaning of Home is a national writing contest for grades 4, 5, and 6, with each student entry resulting in a $10 donation to a local Habitat by Genworth Canada.

But not every Canadian has a place to call home. And that’s why we need your help to raise funds for families in critical need of decent and affordable housing.

As students across the country enter the Meaning of Home writing contest to help other children experience the stability and opportunity of a safe home, your donation will combine with student submissions to double the impact you will have in helping families achieve affordable homeownership!

Your generosity will change lives and give children the chance to thrive in safe communities. This year, our contest Founding Sponsor Genworth Canada along with our Award Sponsors Revera and Silver Hotel Group Ruparell Foundation have donated $255,000 to Habitat Canada in support of the students’ efforts. Our goal is to raise another $255,000 from caring donors like you, for a combined total of $510,000, to help families in critical. Please don’t miss out on this special chance to further your generosity - give now.

Grade 4 Grand Prize Winner

When I think of home I think of warm dinner
I have such a great home I feel like a lottery winner,
When I come home after school to see my dogs tail wagging
I think of people who can't go home and that leaves my heart dragging,

When I go home I see my mom
She shows me how to be calm,
When I think of home I think of my warm bed
I think of the thanks we should give that is left un-said, when I'm at home I feel secure
I think of all the people who cant have a home because they are poor,

When I think of home I think of my room
A place where I can blast my music "boom",
When I think of home I think of good choices
I think of a place with all good voices,
When I think of home I think of bright lights
In my home there are wonderful sights,
I wrote this poem for all to see
Because my home is the most important thing to me
